General Radiology & Fluoroscopy

X-Ray Services in New Jersey

You can think of fluoroscopy as an x-ray “movie.” In this imaging procedure, an x-ray is continually passing through the body and transmitting an image to a nearby monitor. This allows the radiologist at Atlantic Medical Imaging to observe the movement of the body in great detail. Fluoroscopy is primarily used to aid in the diagnosis of diseases and guide surgeons during minimally invasive interventional radiology procedures.

Some common uses of fluoroscopy include:

  • Barium X-rays
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Arthrography
  • Angiograms
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Placing IVs
  • Biopsies
  • Image-guided anesthetic injections

The Fluoroscopy Procedure

Fluoroscopy procedures vary depending on the purpose of your visit, but they generally follow a basic format. First you will need to change into a hospital gown and lie down on an X-ray table. You may be given a contrast agent through an IV, enema, or swallowing. During the exam, you may be asked to adjust your position or hold your breath so that the x-ray can capture the images your radiologist needs.

Fluoroscopic procedures themselves are not painful, but if your fluoroscopy is being used for catheter insertion or some other operation then there may be some discomfort that requires anesthesia beforehand. The time the procedure expects and what you can expect afterward will also depend on the type of fluoroscopy performed.
