Preparing for your Ultrasound

To ensure the best possible results for your ultrasound examination, please follow the preparation guidelines outlined below. Proper preparation helps our team provide you with accurate and timely diagnostic information.

Appointment Guidelines

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time and bring the following information with you:

  • Script, Insurance Card and Photo ID

  • Provide Tracking Number, and Referral (if applicable)

  • Co-payment, co-insurance, and/or deductible is due at the time of your appointment. Contact your insurance provider if you have questions about your plan or coverage.

  • Please bring any prior relevant studies and reports to your appointment.

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your ultrasound exam.

Do not wear any metal or jewelry to your exam.

Before Your Visit

You will receive an email shortly with important information about your appointment, it will include a link for registration paperwork and procedure instructions, please be on the lookout for that information, we strongly encourage you to complete your paperwork and submit a copy of your script before your appointment.

After your exam, you can access your results online through the AMI Patient Portal.

Ultrasound Preparation Instructions:

The following tests DO NOT require any preparation:

  • Breast

  • Scrotal

  • Thyroid

  • Transvaginal

  • Vascular

The following tests require preparation:

Abdomen

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Nothing to eat 8 hours prior to exam

  • Patients may take medications

Abdomen & Abdomen Retro Complete/Limited

  • Nothing to eat 8 hours prior to exam

  • Patient may take medications

Abdomen Complete

  • Nothing to eat prior to exam

  • Infants: 2-3 hours prior to exam

  • 1 to 4 years old: 3-4 hours prior to exam

  • 5 to 10 years old: 5-6 hours prior to exam

  • 11 years old and older: 8 hours prior to exam

  • You may take medications with water

  • No Smoking or Chewing gum on the day of your exam

Abdomen Complete with Doppler

  • Evening prior no fatty or fried foods. No dairy products, carbonated or caffeinated drinks

  • Nothing to eat prior to exam

  • Infants: 2-3 hours prior to exam

  • 1 to 4 years old: 3-4 hours prior to exam

  • 5 to 10 years old: 5-6 hours prior to exam

  • 11 years old and older: 8 hours prior to exam

  • You may take medications with water

  • No Smoking or Chewing gum on the day of your exam

Abdomen Complete and Retro Limited

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Nothing to eat prior to exam

  • No dairy

  • Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your exam

  • No Smoking or Chewing gum on the day of your exam

Abdomen Limited with Elastography

  • Evening prior to your exam, dinner should be light and consist of clear liquids only (Jello, broth, tea)

  • No dairy

  • Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your exam

  • No Smoking or Chewing gum on the day of your exam

Abdomen Retro (Bladder)

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Patient may take medications

Abdomen Retro (Kidneys Only)

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

Aorta Screening

  • Nothing to eat prior to your exam

  • Infants: 2-3 hours prior to exam

  • 1 to 4 years old: 3-4 hours prior to exam

  • 5 to 10 years old: 5-6 hours prior to exam

  • 11 years old and older: 8 hours prior to exam

  • You may have water

  • You may take medications with water

Elastography of Parenchyma

Kidney/Bladder

Pelvic OB (less than 14 weeks)

  • You must have a full bladder prior to your exam. Empty your bladder and then do the following prep based on your age:

  • 12- 18 years old- 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 32 oz of water and finish 30 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • 18 years old and over- 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 32 oz of water and finish 45 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • You may take medication

  • If over 35 weeks, no preparation required

Pelvic OB 2nd Trimester

  • 12- 18 years old- 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 32 oz of water and finish 30 minutes prior to exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • 18 years old and over- 32 oz of water, 45 minutes prior to exam

Pelvis (Male)

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Patient may take medications

Pelvis with Transvaginal

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Patient may take medications

Prostate Transrectal

  • You must administer a Fleet Enema 90 minutes prior to exam

Pyloric Stenosis

  • Withhold infants last feeding (At least two hours prior to exam)

  • Parents must bring a filled bottle with them (any fluid)

Renal Artery with Doppler for Stenosis

  • Evening prior – dinner should be light and consist of clear liquids only (Jello, broth, tea), no dairy

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to exam

  • No Smoking or Chewing gum on the day of your exam

Renal/Kidney

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Patient may take medications

Renal Transplant with Doppler

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

  • Patient may take medications

Renal Transplant without Doppler

  • Must have full bladder prior to exam (see drinking instructions below)

Drinking Instructions

You must have a full bladder prior to your exam. Empty your bladder and then do the following prep based on your age.

  • 2-6 years old – 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 8 oz of water and finish 30 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • 6-12 years old - 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 16 oz of water and finish 30 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • 12-18 years old – 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 32 oz of water and finish 30 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)

  • 18 years old - 1 hour before exam time, start drinking 32 oz of water and finish 45 minutes prior to your exam (DO NOT VOID AFTER DRINKING)
    For US Pelvis Non-OB Limited (Bladder) exam: 18 years old - 24 oz of water 45 minutes prior to exam.
