General Radiology & Fluoroscopy Preparations

Preparations for fluoroscopy vary depending on what type of procedure you need. Below you will find the overview of preparations for various procedures.

Appointment Guidelines

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time and bring the following information with you:

  • Script, Insurance Card and Photo ID

  • Provide Tracking Number, and Referral (if applicable)

  • Co-payment, co-insurance, and/or deductible is due at the time of your appointment. Contact your insurance provider if you have questions about your plan or coverage.

  • Please bring any prior relevant studies and reports to your appointment.

Glucose monitoring devices (Freestyle Libre Flash, etc.) must be removed, please plan to remove prior to your exam to avoid damage.

Do not wear any metal or jewelry to your exam.

Before Your Visit

You will receive an email shortly with important information about your appointment, it will include a link for registration paperwork and procedure instructions, please be on the lookout for that information, we strongly encourage you to complete your paperwork and submit a copy of your script before your appointment.

After your exam, you can access your results online through the AMI Patient Portal.

Arthrogram

  • It is suggested that you have a driver to and from the exam, but it is not required

  • This exam may take up to 2 hours

  • You should drink plenty of water the day prior to this exam

Barium Enema

  • Day before your exam:

  • Have a light breakfast

  • Have clear liquids for lunch and dinner (clear broth, tea, carbonated beverages or Jello- no red Jello)

  • Do not eat solid foods or dairy products

  • In addition to a clear liquid diet, drink 8oz of clear liquids at: 1 PM, 3 PM, 7 PM, and 10 PM

  • At 6 PM take 4 Bisacodyl tablets

  • Day of exam:

  • One hour prior to exam take a Fleet Enema kit (Available at your local pharmacy)

  • Wait 15 minutes before having a bowel movement

Barium Swallow

  • For adults: Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your procedure

  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your physician on how to manage your insulin level while preparing for the exam

  • Medications can be taken at regular times with a small amount of water

  • Wear clothing you can remove from the waist up

Barium Swallow with Marshmallow/Bagel

  • For adults: Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your procedure

  • You must bring 3 regular marshmallows and a bagel with you to your appointment

  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your physician on how to manage your insulin level while preparing for your exam

  • Medications can be taken at regular times with a small amount of water

  • Wear clothing you can remove from the waist up

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

  • Your exam must be scheduled on the 6th through 13th day of your menstrual cycle

  • You cannot have unprotected sex from the start of your menstrual cycle until after your exam

Intravenous Urogram (IVP)

  • Do not eat or drink four (4) hours prior to your examination

  • Drink plenty of water the day before your exam

Myelogram

  • Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to your exam

  • Drink plenty of water the day prior to your exam

  • You must bring someone to drive you home or your exam will be rescheduled

Small Bowel and Upper Gastro-Intestinal with Small Bowel

  • Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your procedure

  • Medications can be taken at regular times with a small sip of water

  • Procedure can take 1-4 hours

  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your physician on how to manage your insulin level while preparing for your exam

  • You will need to completely change into a medical gown

Upper Gastro-Intestinal Series (Upper GI)

  • For adults: Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to your procedure

  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your physician on how to manage your insulin level while preparing for your exam

  • For children (Ages 1-14): No solid food 6 hours prior to your procedure, a clear liquid diet any time prior to the procedure is fine

  • For infants (under 1): Do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to procedure, your child should be thirsty and ready to drink upon arrival for the study. Bring a special cup or sippy cup your child likes to use. If your child drinks best from a bottle, bring a bottle

  • For all patients: Medications can be taken at regular times with a small sip of water.

  • Wear clothing you can remove from the waist up, you will be given a gown

  • Upper GI uses x-rays; anyone pregnant cannot be in the room during the exam

Upper Gastro-Intestinal Series (Upper GI) Lapband Children

  • For children (Ages 1-14): No solid food 6 hours prior to your procedure, a clear liquid diet any time prior to the procedure is fine

  • For infants (under 1): Do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to procedure, your child should be thirsty and ready to drink upon arrival for the study. Bring a special cup or sippy cup your child likes to use. If your child drinks best from a bottle, bring a bottle

  • For all patients: Medications can be taken at regular times with a small sip of water

  • Wear clothing you can remove from the waist up, you will be given a gown

  • If you are diabetic, please consult with your physician on how to manage your insulin level while preparing for your exam
