A Safe & Noninvasive Breast Imaging Test

Breast ultrasounds are often used to diagnose abnormalities in the breast. These are safe, painless, and noninvasive tests that create an image of the inner breast using soundwaves. The primary use of breast ultrasound is to help diagnose breast abnormalities detected during a physical exam (such as a lump or bloody or spontaneous clear nipple discharge) and to characterize potential abnormalities seen on mammography or breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Ultrasound imaging can help to determine if an abnormality is solid (which may be a non-cancerous lump of tissue or a cancerous tumor) or fluid-filled (such as a benign cyst) or both cystic and solid. Ultrasound can also help show additional features of the abnormal area. Doppler ultrasound is used to assess blood supply in breast lesions.

What Happens During a Breast Ultrasound

For the examination, you will lie face-up on a table. A gel will be applied to the ultrasound by a doctor or nurse. A wand is then run over the breasts which release soundwaves that are transferred to and interpreted by a computer. The computer creates a live-feed image of the inside of the breast using the data from these soundwaves. No injections are needed and the test should be painless.

If your breast ultrasound has been ordered as part of an ultrasound-guided biopsy, then a small incision will be made in the breast while the ultrasound is being used so the doctor can take a tissue sample. With the ultrasound guiding the doctor’s hand, they should be able to make the extraction with only a single small incision that will heal within a few days.
