New Jersey MRI

Powerful Imaging Technology

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful imaging tools in modern medicine. Unlike many imaging devices, the MRI uses magnets instead of radiation to create images. MRIs are also painless and noninvasive, making them one of the most effective and efficient imaging tests currently available.

Doctors may recommend a patient receive an MRI for several reasons, such as:

  • Examining broken or fractured bones
  • Screening for cancer
  • Assessing damage from injuries
  • Searching for tumors
  • Searching for blocked or damaged blood vessels
  • Diagnosing arthritis
  • Checking for organ damage
  • Screening for signs of dementia

This is by no means an exhaustive list. MRIs serve several purposes and can help doctors diagnose several types of injuries, illnesses, and disorders. Atlantic Medical Imaging offices in New Jersey use the same state-of-the-art MRI technology found in major university hospitals.

What to Expect During MRI

As mentioned above, MRIs are painless and noninvasive. There is not much you need to do to prepare for one other than removing metal objects such as piercings and rings. You should also inform your doctor if you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or other metallic implants that could be damaged by an MRI. Fasting may be required depending on the purpose of the MRI.

The MRI itself is a large, tube-shaped scanner. Patients lie on a table that slides into the scanner and remain still while the images are taken. The MRI scan can be time-consuming, lasting anywhere between 15 and 90 minutes. Some patients feel claustrophobic lying still in the tube for so long. There is an intercom in the scanner so you can alert the technologist if needed. Your doctor may provide you with a sedative if you are having a particularly hard time lying still.
