Nuclear Medicine Preparations


Biliary Scan

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • NPO for four hours prior to scan.
  • No barium studies for two days prior to the scan.
  • No Demerol or morphine type medications for 24 hours prior
    to scan.

Biliary Scan With
EF

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • NPO for four hours prior to scan.
  • No barium studies for two days prior to the scan.
  • No Demerol or morphine type medications for 24 hours prior
    to scan.
Bone Scan 3 Phase

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • Patient should drink extra liquids before and after the
    injection.
  • Patient can leave and must return 4 hours later.
Bone Scan Limited

 

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • Patient should drink extra liquids before and after the
    injection.
  • Patient can leave and must return 3 hours later.

Bone Scan for
Total Body

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • Patient should drink extra liquids before and after the
    injection.
  • Patient can leave and must return 3 hours later.

 

Bone SPECT Scan –
Script must specify SPECT

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Patient should drink extra liquids before and after the
    scan.
  • Patient can leave and must return 3 hours later.


 

Brain SPECT Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
  

Esophageal Transit
Scan

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • NPO for four hours prior to scan.

 


Gallium Scan For
Infection, Inflammation, Fever of Unknown Origin, or Sarcoidosis

Gallium Scans are
done at Galloway, Cape May, and Wall
locations.

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • Prep – None (Patient will be told at time of injection if
    any prep is needed for the scan).
  • Patient can not have any contrast scans between the gallium
    injection and the gallium scan.
  • Patient will return 24 hours post injection for a 1 hour
    scan.
  • Patient will return 48 hours post injection for a 1 hour scan.

 

 

Gallium Scan For Tumors,
Lymphomas, Leukemia, and Other Malignancies

Gallium Scans are
done at Galloway, Cape May, and Wall
locations.

  • Patient must bring prescription.
  • Prep – None (Patient will be told at time of injection if
    any prep is needed for the scan).
  • Patient can not have any contrast scans between the gallium
    injection and the gallium scan. 
  • Patient will return 72 hours post injection for a 1 hour
    scan. 
  • Patient will return 96 hours post injection for a 1 hour
    scan.

 

Gastric Emptying
Scan – Liquid or Solid

  • Patient must bring script. Script must specify liquid or
    solid.
  • NPO for four hours prior to scan.
  • Ask patient if they are allergic to eggs.
  • No barium studies for three days prior to scan.
  • No narcotic medication for 24 hours prior to scan. (Ex.:
    Methadone, morphine, etc.)
  • No sedatives for 12 hour prior to scan.
  • Avoid taking motility drugs such as Reglan, domperidone,
    cisapride, and erythromycin on day of scan.

Gastric Reflux

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Patient must be NPO as of midnight prior to the scan.
  • No barium studies for three days prior to scan.
 

Liver Spleen Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Prep – None
  • No barium studies for two days prior to scan.

Liver Hemangioma
RBC SPECT Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
  • No barium studies for two days prior to scan.
  • Patient leaves for two hours.

Liver SPECT Scan –
Script must specify SPECT

  • Patient must bring script.
  • No barium studies for two days prior to scan.

 

Meckel’s
Diverticulum Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
  • NPO for four hours prior to scan.
  • No barium studies for three days prior to scan.

Parathyroid Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Patient can leave and must return 2 hours later.


Renal Scan

  • Patient must bring script.
 

Renal Scan With
Captopril

  • Patient must bring script.
Refer to Medication
List Below - Patient must consult their physician before stopping medications. 
Patient must be
off these Beta Blockers for 24 hours prior to the first day.

Acebutolol, Atenolol, Betabloc, Betagan, Betopic, Betaxolol,
Bisprolol, Blocadren, Brevibloc,

Carteolo, Cartrol, Carvedilol, Coreg, Corgard, Corzide,
Dutoprol, Esmolol, Inderal, Inderide, Kerlone,

Lebetalol, Levobunolol, Levatol, Lopressor, Metipranlolol,
Metroprolol, Monocor, Nadolol, Normodyne, Occupress, Oxprenolol, Penbutolol,
Pindolol, Propranolol, Rhotral, Sectral, Tenoretic, Tenormin, Timolide,
Timolol, Toprol, Trandate, Transicor, Visken, Zebeta, Ziac

 

Patient must be
off these Ace Inhibitors for 48 hours prior to the first day.

Accupril, Accuretic, Aceon, Altace, Atacand, Benazepril,
Capoten, Captopril, Capozide, Enalapril, Fosinopril, Inhibace Plus, Lapoxide,
Lexxel,Lisinopril, Lotensin, Lotrel, Mavik, Moexipril, Monopril,  Moexipril, Perindopril, Prinivil, Prinizide,
Quinapril, Ramipril, Tarka, Trandolapril,Uniretic, Univasc, Vaseretic, Vasotec,
Zestoretic, Zestril

 

Patient must be
off these Angiotensin II Receptors for 48 hours prior to the first day.

Atacand, Avalide, Avapro, Benicar, Candesartan, Cozaar,
Diovan, Eprosartan, Exforge, Hyzaar, Iosartan, Irbesartan, Micardis,
Olmesartan, Telmisartan, Teveten, Valsartan

 

 

Renal Scan Using
DMSA

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Patient can leave and must return 2 hours later.

Renal Scan With
Lasix

  • Patient must bring script.
  • Patient should drink extra fluids before the scan.

 

Salivary Gland
Scan

  • Patient must bring a script.

Thyroid Scan

Thyroid Scans are
done at Galloway, Cape May, and Wall
locations.

  • Patient must bring a script.
  • Patient must be NPO from midnight before the capsule is administered.
  • No iodinated contrast within 6 weeks (IVP dye or CT dye).
  • No Nuclear Medicine exams within 1 week prior to scan.
  • No barium studies for 1 week prior to the scan (UGI’s,
    Barium Swallow, CT Abdomen, Small Bowel Series).
  • No shellfish, kelp, or cabbage for 48 hours prior to the
    scan.
  • No oral cholecystographic agents for 3 months prior to the
    scan (oral gallbladder tablets for flouro).
  • Patient leaves and returns 6 hours later for a 45 minute
    scan.
  • Patient returns 24 hours post capsule administration for a
    15 minute uptake.

List Below – Patient must consult their physician before stopping meds.

Medications – Must
be off for 1 week prior to scan.

Amiodarone, Perchlorate, Propylthiouracil, Salicylates,
Sulfonamides, Tapazole, Methimazole,

Thiocyanate

 

Medications – Must
be off for 2 weeks prior to scan.

Iodine Solution (Lugol’s or SSKI)

Some cough medicines and vitamins.

 

Medications – Must
be off for 3 weeks prior to scan.

Cytomel, Euthyrox, Levolet, Levothroid, Levothyroxine, Levoxyl,
Liothyronine, Novothyrox, Proloid,

Synthroid, Thyrotab, Tirosint, Triiodothyronine, Triostat,
Unithroid
